Charleston Says Farewell to a Visionary Leader
In a heartfelt announcement, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry revealed that their founding CEO, Merridith Crowe, will be stepping down from her role effective November 1, 2024. Crowe, who has been at the helm since April 2019, has played an instrumental part in uplifting the lives of young people in the Charleston community.
A Legacy of Love and Commitment
Under Crowe’s leadership, the organization has made tremendous strides by supporting over 550 “Littles,” “Scholars,” and “Bigs”. With a focus on creating meaningful connections, Crowe emphasized that her journey was fueled by passion and a desire to see young people realize their potential. “Founding and achieving organizational stability has been a true honor and act of love,” Crowe stated in a recent news release. Her refreshing take on leadership has fostered an environment of inclusion and community collaboration.
Success for the Next Generation
During her tenure, BBBSL has not only solidified its presence in the Lowcountry but also garnered national recognition within Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Reports have shown that participants in the program are graduating from high school and avoiding risky behaviors at rates significantly higher than their peers outside of the program. These compelling outcomes indicate the profound impact of Crowe’s initiatives.
Additionally, BBBSL launched the BIG Beyond Scholar Program, which centers on career and college readiness. This program aims to arm participants with the tools and skills necessary for their future, ensuring that they are not just prepared for higher education but also equipped for success in their chosen careers.

The BBBSL Board of Directors is currently in the process of conducting a national search for Crowe’s replacement. Peter Davidson, chair of the board, expressed gratitude for Merridith’s dedicated service, stating, “We’re grateful for and commend Merridith’s service to the organization and the community.” Davidson also highlighted the strong foundation that has been built during Crowe’s tenure, paving the way for continued growth and service in the coming years.
