The first week of August in Charleston is ripe with an array of events covering culture, art, history and family fun. Residents and visitors will be treated to a unique blend of activities that encapsulate the rich heritage and vibrant life of this iconic city.

Sunset on the Stono at the Charleston Museum

The Charleston Museum is hosting a new event dubbed ‘Sunset on the Stono’ at the Dill Sanctuary on August 8th. This provides a valuable opportunity to experience the breathtaking views and wildlife in the sanctuary, a location not open to public visitation apart from specific events. A tour of the Confederate fortification, Battery Pringle, will be led by the museum’s chief curator, Jennifer McCormick. The tour concludes with participants settling in to savor the sunset view.

Dog Daze of Summer Opening Reception

Charleston Crafts Gallery will showcase the works of fiber artist LuAnn Rosenzweig, wood artist Daniel Diehl, origami artist Regina Semko, and silver artist Valerie Lamott in the ‘Dog Daze of Summer’ group exhibition. The opening reception will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 2nd, and the exhibition continues throughout the rest of August.

James Island Town Market

The town of James Island hosts the James Island Town Market every first Friday of the month, extending to December. The market features local craft vendors, food trucks, local produce, music, lawn games, and children’s activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and water, and support local small business owners.

A Funny Thing Happened Musical

Queen Street Playhouse presents ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’. This musical comedy, widely considered as Broadway’s greatest farce, is a combination of time-tested, 2000-year-old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus and the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. Performances run from August 2nd to 4th, with ticket prices varying.

Kids Brunch ‘n’ Craft

The last installment of the summer Kids Brunch ‘n’ Craft series will be happening on August 7th. Children can participate in a free craft activity and enjoy the brunch menu options. During this event, crafters will be making personalized keychains for their own use, and in a special offer, kids can eat free with an adult entree purchase at Ruby Sunshine.

The city of Charleston continues to offer a diverse range of activities that cater to all ages and interests. The first week of August sees the city buzzing with action in art, history, music, and craftsmanship. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, there’s something to look forward to – from engaging with the rich local heritage to enjoying the charming city-life of Charleston.
