South Carolina Gamecocks Navigate Post-Duckworth Era: Exploring New Recruits and the Future of the Team

South Carolina’s Next Steps After Landon Duckworth’s Decommitment

Perhaps the most talked-about recent development in South Carolina’s sports realm is All-Star quarterback Landon Duckworth’s decision to re-enter recruitment, announced via a tweet that has since garnered over 74,000 impressions and counting. The buzz among Gamecock fans is palpable—what does this mean and what’s next for the South Carolina Gamecocks?

A New Kind of Recruitment

Duckworth, a celebrated ’26 quarterback, acknowledged the support he received from the Gamecocks in his statement, stating, “Nothing but love for Dowell Loggains, Coach Beamer, Riley Watkins, the Gamecocks staff, and Gamecock Nation for believing in me!” However, this scenario—while unfortunate for the team—is not quite as shocking as it would have been a few years ago. The landscape of recruitment has changed, with players more prone to exploring multiple options before settling down at one team.

So, for the Jackson, Alabama native, this might just be a part of the journey. There’s every chance he might return for an Official Visit (OV) before he signs his Letter of Intent. Coach Beamer, along with the Gamecock coaching staff, is well-known for their commitment towards fostering strong relationships with recruits, be it at the local or national level.

Potential Replacements

Looking ahead at the 2027 recruiting class, the Gamecocks have extended offers to three elite ’27 quarterbacks: dual-threat William Jackson, Champ Smith, and Trent Seaborn—okay, but what’s next?

To Consider: William Jackson

William Jackson, a Floridian standing at an imposing 6-foot-4, is perhaps the most comprehensive prospect among the quarterbacks. He is known for his skill at imparting subtle touch to the football while demonstrating impressive stability in the pocket, which allows him to move swiftly and effectively throw the ball downfield. This balanced right-hander already holds 21 offers, including one from South Carolina, extended on June 11th.

To Consider: Champ Smith

Champ Smith, another Florida native, is no stranger to varsity games. He joined the ranks in the eighth grade, boasting an impressive record of pass completions. From leading Jupiter Christian to notable performances in the Sunshine State division, he’s made his presence felt. Smith is preparing to move to the 305 district and don blue and red for Christopher Columbus. Ranked the 11th best pro-style quarterback in ’27, Smith has received multiple Power-5 offers, including one from South Carolina on June 1st.

To Consider: Trent Seaborn

Trent Seaborn, a Hawaii native who relocated to Alabama at the recommendation of the Tagovailoa family, could be the wildcard here. Seaborn’s impressive and award-winning performance in leading Thompson to the 7A championship is a conversation of its own. The young quarterback received an early offer from South Carolina on May 22nd.

Looking Forward

As the dust settled around Duckworth’s decision, the true implications may not yet be apparent. If last year’s flip with Jalewis Solomon is any indicator, it is possible for Coach Beamer and his team to successfully attract a player back to their fold. The exciting world of recruitment is never static but South Carolina Gamecocks are more than capable of rebounding from this setback.
