On May 14, 2024, in a breakthrough announcement, renowned publisher Southern Living revealed the selection of Johns Island, South Carolina, as the site for its 2024 Idea House. The picturesque waterfront neighborhood of Kiawah River, the region’s premiere “agrihood,” has been selected as the location. The unveiling is a testament to the commitment and innovation of the local community in fusing modern living with traditional southern charm.

Details of The ‘Idea House’

The novel ‘Idea House’ embodies the essence of the Lowcountry, showcasing a 4,400 square-foot farmhouse situated in the heart of the region’s first agrihood, Kiawah River. Agrihoods are planned communities designed around a working farm, integrating agriculture into residential neighborhoods. The house reflects a distinctive architecture that seamlessly blends with the environment, boasting outdoor living spaces set against the backdrop of stunning water views.

Emphasizing local collaborations, the ‘Idea House’ will incorporate the work of various Charleston-based creatives. Among them are Andrea Cayetano-Jefferson of Gullah Sweetgrass Baskets, renowned for her stunning coil baskets, and Rebecca Atwood, a renowned textile designer whose work brings depth and texture to the overall design.
