Charleston County Schools name new deputy superintendent, staff attorney

The Charleston County School District Board of Trustees announced that they’ve hired the next deputy superintendent, and he’s from outside of the district. The board announced the two new hires following a lengthy board meeting Monday night.

After an “extensive interview process,” the Board of Trustees selected Dr. Luke Clamp as the next Deputy Superintendent of the Charleston County School District. Clamp is from Williston, South Carolina, and currently serves as the High Schools and Postsecondary Pathways Executive Director in Lexington County School District One. Clamp is filling the role after former Deputy Superintendent Anita Huggins officially took over the position of superintendent in February.

The Board of Trustees also named Toya Hampton as the next staff attorney following Monday night’s meeting. Hampton is a former member of the Board of Trustees and has served as Director of Achieve Charleston since March 2023.

The Board of Trustees voted 7-1 to hire Clamp. Daron Calhoun was the one person who voted against the hire. Clamp’s contract is set for three years, but salary and start date have yet to be negotiated.
