Van Bussel Joins Cougar Roster – College of Charleston Athletics
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston head men’s basketball coach Chris Mack has announced the addition of Stef van Bussel to the 2024-25 roster. van Bussel played his freshman season at St. Louis with Cougars assistant coach Chris Harriman and will come to Charleston with three years of eligibility remaining. He will also team up with former Billiken Djordje Curcic.
Exciting Talent on Board
“We are excited to announce the signing of Stef van Bussel to our roster. Stef had an injury plagued freshman year at SLU but battled his way through it to finish off the 23-24 season extremely well. Stef’s ability to rebound showed itself down the stretch in A-10 play,” said Mack.
Impressive Track Record
van Bussel saw action in 21 games for the Billikens, averaging 1.6 points per game and 2.6 rebounds per game. The Netherlands native showed his rebounding ability during the end of the regular season in the A-10, grabbing ten boards vs. Rhode Island, four vs. St. Bonaventure, six vs. Rhode Island, and five vs. Duquesne in March. His experience in both domestic and international competitions has prepared him well for the challenges ahead.
International Experience
Before making his mark in the U.S., van Bussel played with Basketball Academy Limburg in the Netherlands and Bayer Giants Leverkusen in Germany. In the NBBL, Germany’s highest youth league, he showcased his skills by scoring 12.1 ppg on 60% shooting while averaging 7.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. Additionally, he represented the Dutch U18 National Team in 2021 and 2022, adding a layer of international experience to his resume.
Strong Foundation and Team Player
“He will provide a bruising physical presence on both ends, an ability to rebound and a special presence in the locker room. Stef is blue collar through and through and will improve dramatically during his time as a Cougar,” added Mack. His dedication to the game and team-oriented mentality make him a valuable asset both on and off the court.
Looking Ahead
With van Bussel’s addition to the roster, the College of Charleston men’s basketball team gains a versatile player with a strong work ethic and a proven track record of success. As he continues to develop his skills and adapt to the collegiate level, fans can expect to see him make significant contributions to the team’s performance in the upcoming seasons.
