CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) — A former Charleston County deputy and school resource officer was arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident that occurred on Thanksgiving. John Christopher Adams is charged with domestic violence in the second degree. He was arrested by the Hanahan Police Department (HPD) on March 7 and released on $10,000 bond the following day, according to jail records.

Incident Details and Resignation

According to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Officer (CCSO), Adams is a former deputy and served as the school resource officer for Camp Road Middle School in Charleston. The incident occurred last Thanksgiving, Nov. 23. It was reported to Hannahan Police on March 5. Adams resigned from the sheriff’s office the same day, according to a copy of a resignation letter provided to News 4 on March 13.

According to Adams’ separation paperwork obtained March 14 from the state police academy, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office accepted Adams’ voluntary resignation and launched an internal investigation into violations of both state and internal agency conduct regulations. Adams was arrested and charged by Hanahan Police on March 7, the same day his formal separation from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office was processed by the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy.

Details of the Incident

Documents from Hanahan Police show one of the individuals who reported the domestic incident identified herself as Adams’ wife. The woman said she and Adams attended a Thanksgiving gathering at a Hanahan residence. The victim and witnesses told officers Adams became agitated after consuming alcoholic beverages throughout the day. Adams left the gathering in his vehicle with a woman and juvenile as passengers, but got into an argument with the woman and struck her with the back of his hand, police said.

Adams then returned to the Hanahan residence, where he knocked another female down and got on top of her. Adams refused to get off the female, prompting a man to punch him in the face and knock him out. Police say they viewed video footage of an argument inside Adams’ vehicle and Adams being on top of a female individual.
