In a bid to turn the tables in the South Carolina House of Representatives, John Moffett, a Democrat, recently announced his candidacy for District 110. He is set to challenge the serving Republican Representative, Tom Hartnett. Moffett’s campaign is grounded in the promise of delivering ‘common sense’ politics, asserting that the current Republican-led state legislature operates in extremism.

Moffett’s Stance and Strategy

“Loud and out-of-touch voices dominate politics today in both Washington and Columbia,” expressed Moffett during his announcement, emphasizing his drive to bring about positive change for the district and the state overall. Instead of heated rhetoric, Moffett aims to collaborate with individuals from diverse political backgrounds to engineer effective solutions that would usher the community forward.

District 110 Overview

South Carolina’s District 110 comprises parts of downtown Charleston, West Ashley, James Island, and Mount Pleasant. The district was previously represented by the current Charleston Mayor, William Cogswell, who served in the state legislature from 2016 to 2022. However, since 2012, no Democrat has been elected to represent this district. In the latest election, Hartnett outpaced his Democrat competitor, Ellis Roberts, by a margin of 8.2 percentage points.

Disagreements with Hartnett

Moffett let his disagreements with Hartnett be known, accusing him of regularly siding with the ultra-conservative factions despite bearing a “Lowcountry name.” He also critiqued Hartnett’s votes on contentious issues such as abortion rights and education, vehemently asserting that Hartnett often turns against Lowcountry values.

Pillars of Moffett’s Campaign

Moffett outlined his campaign’s key objectives during his announcement, which include repealing the abortion bans introduced by the state legislature, advocating for in vitro fertilization, instituting gun safety measures, and harnessing more funding for road and infrastructure upgrades. Moffett also pledged to confront the persistent issue of flooding and devote his energies to develop legislation that benefits public education.

Moffett voiced his concerns over the state bureaucracy’s attack on the freedoms of their citizens and their failure to address pressing issues like flooding and gun safety. He noted that the authorities “cowered to fringe groups” on essential matters and took away a woman’s right to make personal abortion choices.

John Moffett, a proud resident and graduate of the College of Charleston, champions the belief that it’s high time voters regain their control over the state government’s agenda.
