Nation's Largest Pet Adoption Event Comes to Charleston This December!

Get Ready, Charleston! It’s Time to Bring Home a New Furry Friend!

Hey there, Charleston! If you’ve been thinking about adding a little more pawsitivity to your life, now’s your chance! The nation’s largest adoption event, Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty The Shelters, is happening right here in our community this December. This incredible event is all about helping those adorable homeless pets find the loving homes they truly deserve. How cute is that?

Why It’s So Important

As the warm and fuzzy holiday season rolls around, shelter workers are reminding us just how crucial it is to give a shelter pet the ultimate gift this year—a cozy spot on your couch! According to Kay Hyman, Director of Community Engagement at the Charleston Pet Foundation, the shelters are currently “packed with dogs.” She emphasizes that it’s super important to get these furry pals out of the shelter environment. “They start to break down their attitude. It is just hard on them to be in a shelter. They’d much prefer to be at your house on your couch or at your feet,” Hyman shared.

Adoption is a Two-Way Street

Adopting a pet doesn’t just mean you’re bringing a new friend into your life; it’s a lifesaver for shelters like the Charleston Animal Society as well! The more pets that find homes, the easier it becomes for these shelters to manage their overcrowded facilities.

“There’s nothing typical about what you get when you adopt at Charleston Animal Society because it’s an amazing package,” Hyman explained. During the Empty The Shelters event, which runs until Dec. 17, the adoption fees are reduced, making it easier than ever to bring one of these furry friends into your family.

What’s Included?

When you adopt a pet during this event, you’re getting quite the deal! Not only will your adoption fee be lower, but you’ll also benefit from the following:

  • Spaying and Neutering of animals
  • Testing for common ailments like leukemia and heartworm
  • All necessary vaccinations before adoption
  • If your new furry friend needs medications, the shelter will supply them!

As Hyman puts it, “So it’s just a win-win!” You get an adorable pet, and the shelter can help another animal in need, clearing up space for even more furry friends to find homes.

A Call to Action

Think about this: when you adopt, you save two animals. Not only does the lucky one you take home get a loving family, but you also help create space for another animal looking for their perfect match. How amazing is that? Hyman urges everyone, “Kathy Bissell and Bissell Pet Foundation are helping shelters throughout the country to empty their shelters right now. So go to a shelter near you, whether it’s Colleton County, Dorchester, Berkeley—go to a shelter near you and help us to save lives.”

What If You Can’t Adopt?

Not everyone can open their hearts and homes to a pet, but you can still make a difference! You’re welcome to support local shelters in other ways. Consider donating items or cash to keep these shelters running smoothly. You can also shop for stocking stuffers, treats, and toys at the Charleston Animal Society’s store—100% of the proceeds go towards helping animals in the community!

So, Charleston, are you ready to spread some love and make a difference this holiday season? Adopt, donate, volunteer—there are so many ways to help! Join the movement and show some love to our furry friends. Let’s make this December one to remember!
