Exciting Developments in Charleston: A Sneak Peek at the Boeing Learning Lab
Charleston, a stunning city known for its rich history and beautiful waterfront, is buzzing with excitement over the latest project taking shape at the Charleston Maritime Center. The Boeing Learning Lab, a new exhibit being developed by the South Carolina Aquarium, promises to be a fantastic addition to our community’s educational landscape. This 8,500 square foot facility will feature four indoor classrooms, an open-air classroom, a broadcast studio for virtual programs, and dedicated office space for aquarium staff.
A Special Preview for Women in Construction
Recently, over 30 inspiring members of the Charleston Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) had the exclusive opportunity to tour this exciting new site. Trident Construction, which is at the helm of the project, hosted these remarkable women for a hard hat tour. It was a chance for everyone to witness firsthand how various teams including construction workers, architects, and engineers are coming together to create a custom learning lab designed to inspire future generations.
Tim Kennedy, the president of Trident Construction, shared his excitement about supporting such a talented group. He noted, “There are many talented female leaders in the construction industry, especially here in Charleston. Our company is thrilled to support these extraordinary individuals by hosting an event for them at one of our favorite projects, The Boeing Learning Lab.”
Empowering the Next Generation
Jordan Dickens, a board member of NAWIC, emphasized the importance of visibility for women in construction. She articulated a shared belief among the members: “All our members are experts in their field, whether that’s owning their own construction firm as I do or working in what was once considered a man’s role such as plumbing, electricity, roofing, and HVAC. They do it all, and they do it extremely well.”
This initiative is not just about constructing a building—it’s about nurturing the growth of young women in the field and showcasing the vital roles they can play in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry.
The Learning Lab’s Dynamic Offerings
The Boeing Learning Lab will serve as a pivotal resource for the South Carolina Aquarium, effectively doubling the number of students they can engage each year through their core education offerings. This includes a variety of programs tailored for teenagers, such as the High School Intern Program and exciting Teen Science Cafés. The aim is to ignite curiosity about aquatic life and environmental stewardship among our youth, inspiring the next generation of scientists and conservationists.
Construction on this state-of-the-art facility began in July 2023, and it’s estimated to be completed by December 2024. This collaborative project is proudly supported by the City of Charleston, and it promises to play a significant role in enhancing educational opportunities in the region.
What’s Next for Charleston?
As we look forward to the grand opening of the Boeing Learning Lab, it’s exciting to know that Charleston continues to embrace initiatives that promote education, community involvement, and the empowerment of women in various industries. The ongoing support for projects like these highlights our city’s commitment to innovation and quality education—a legacy that will undoubtedly shape our community for years to come.
Keep an eye on Charleston as we watch this incredible educational resource come to life, bringing with it opportunities for learning, growth, and inspiration.
