Charleston Expands Rideshare Zones Through 2024
In a vibrant move to enhance transportation options, the lovely city of Charleston, South Carolina, has announced that its rideshare zone pilot program will continue through the end of 2024. This initiative features seven designated pick-up and drop-off areas along the bustling upper King Street. With the aim of improving safety and traffic flow, the city is making strides to make rideshares more efficient and user-friendly.
Zone Benefits and Safety
According to Michael Mathis, the Director of Traffic and Transportation, the main goal of these rideshare zones is to concentrate where riders are picked up and dropped off, which in turn aids traffic flow and keeps everyone safe. “It really helps concentrate where those riders go to and where the rideshare drivers pick up folks. And it also helps with safety with the police department there,” he explains.
Initiated back in May, the program originally rolled out five rideshare pick-up and drop-off zones. In practice, this meant designating a few parking spaces exclusively for rideshares from the hours of 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. The city made it a point to post clear signage and work closely with popular rideshare apps to roll out the zones effectively.
Keeping Traffic Flowing
The rideshare zones are more than just designated spots; they also play a crucial role in keeping the area’s traffic flowing smoothly. By establishing these zones, the city aims to allow law enforcement the chance to focus on other pressing issues in the area. “They have a lot of other things going on in Upper King Street, and so the less they have to deal with when it comes to guiding people and worrying about people stepping in the street, it helps them from a safety standpoint,” Mathis adds.
Data-Driven Decisions
Originally, the pilot program was set to conclude on October 31, but thanks to insightful heat maps from data collected since the program’s launch, city staff noticed a couple of hotspots that could greatly benefit from even more rideshare zones. As a result, the decision has been made to keep the pilot program running until the end of 2024, with two new zones added at the intersections of Ann Street and Calhoun Street.
The introduction of these new areas is fueled by data showing that the current zones have been performing well. “We’ve seen some good data. The rideshare services have been very helpful in providing some heat map data that allows us to see exactly where those people are being picked up and dropped off,” Mathis notes. Thanks to this data, the city can pinpoint exactly where further improvements can be made.
What’s Next?
Looking ahead, the city staff and leaders are committed to reevaluating the program’s effectiveness at the end of 2024. They will be assessing the possibility of making these rideshare zones a permanent fixture, and even extending availability to a 24/7 basis! The Traffic and Transportation Committee plans to review the data collected during the pilot before making any recommendations to the city council in 2025.
