Charleston’s Towboat US is Making a Splash for Breast Cancer Awareness
As October rolls along, the lovely city of Charleston, S.C., is adding a splash of color to its waters with a striking pink towboat named Big Lou. This unique initiative, driven by Towboat US Charleston, is not just about making waves; it’s a heartwarming effort to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. Planned as part of a broader national movement by Towboat US, Charleston is one of only five ports participating in this standout initiative.
Awareness and Support Go Hand in Hand
Thomas Griffin, co-owner of Towboat US Charleston, couldn’t be prouder of their involvement. “This is our pink boat, Big Lou, and we’re honored to be one of five Towboat US ports across the nation chosen to raise awareness for breast cancer,” he said. Together with his wife and fellow co-owner, Kirsten Griffin, they are passionate about ensuring that the message reaches the community loud and clear.
Kirsten brought attention to the sobering statistics surrounding breast cancer. “One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. There currently is no known cure, so early diagnosis is crucial to survival,” she shared. The couple firmly believes in the initiative’s purpose beyond just raising awareness. They support the mission of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which emphasizes early detection screenings, education about breast health, and providing support for women currently battling the disease.
Fundraising Efforts Underway
Towboat US Charleston has set a target of raising $5,000 for breast cancer initiatives and is making strong progress toward that goal. The funds garnered will contribute to various programs facilitated by the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which work tirelessly to educate, support, and save lives.
A Familiar Sight on the Water
For those who frequent the waterways, Big Lou is more than just a pretty pink boat; it plays an essential role in assisting with recreational boat towing. “It’s a 24/7, 365 days a year job. We respond at all times of the day and night to help out the recreational boating community,” Thomas explained. Whether it’s day or night, the dedicated crew is always ready to assist those in need on the water.
A Personal Touch to the Cause
The name Big Lou holds a special meaning for Thomas and Kirsten. “Lou was my grandmother, and many of our other boats are named after women who have battled breast cancer, some of whom have thankfully survived it,” Kirsten added, sharing how personal the fight against breast cancer has been for their family.
