Advanced 3D Camera Equipment Revolutionizes Local Family’s Life

In Charleston, S.C., a life-altering surgical procedure is transforming the lives of a local family, owing to the use of pioneering 3D camera equipment.

The Trauma and the Miracle

Everly, the daughter of a local resident, Penny Sharp, suffered from a stroke shortly after her birth, which led to daily seizures. A major concern for Sharp was that conventional surgical procedures might result in her daughter never being able to walk again. However, the introduction of the Synaptive Exoscope in the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) marked a miraculous turning point in Everly’s condition.

The Synaptive Exoscope, a cutting-edge surgical tool, was showcased at a demonstration on Tuesday. This tool significantly reduces surgery time for patients while providing superior optics of the patient’s body for the surgeon, leading to enhanced accuracy and efficiency during surgery.

According to Dr. Sunil Patel, the chairman of Neurosurgery at MUSC, “The other benefit of this technology is that it helps you avoid complications. The outcomes are much better. And even looking at the pathology that you’re treating, whether it’s clipping an aneurysm, removing a tumor, removing a herniated disc in the back, or removing pineal cysts. This is improving.”

The Aftermath of the Surgery

Everly has not experienced a single seizure since her surgery in 2022. The success of the procedure meant being able to truly know their daughter for the first time. “People take that for granted. But after the surgery, we were able to see her, how she was, and she’s really funny”, says Sharp. She added, “I believe with all of my heart that this equipment did that and helped him and us in such a successful surgery.”

Future Developments

The Synaptive Exoscope is currently in use at the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, primarily for pediatric surgeries. However, plans are underway to introduce this state-of-the-art technology at the main MUSC hospital site, widening its reach and potential to benefit numerous more patients.

This groundbreaking 3D camera equipment not only provides a beacon of hope for families battling similar health complications but may also set a new standard in surgical procedures. Technology like this reaffirms that medical advancements today have the potential to affect and change lives in the most profound ways.

The medical team at MUSC, by adopting such transformative equipment, demonstrates the power of combining medical expertise with state-of-the-art technology to achieve remarkable health outcomes for patients, thereby reshaping their lives and those of their families.
