2024 Charleston Jazz Festival: The Southern Pines
The Music Farm will echo with the soulful symphony of jazz as the 2024 Charleston Jazz Festival presents The Southern Pines on April 18, at 7:30PM. The Southern Pines band is bringing a female-driven performance featuring a confluence of some of the Southeast’s most notable jazz musicians.
The band comprises both new and established talents, including two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Quiana Parler known for her work with Ranky Tanky. The rest of the band consists of Lauren Meccia on saxophone, Matt White on trumpet, Jesus Fuentes on piano, Teja Veal on bass, and the bandleader Colleen Clark on drums.
The Southern Pines Band Formed with Inspiration
The genesis of The Southern Pines is rooted in the inspiration from South Carolina life and the “Our Own Work, Our Own Way: Ascendant Women Artists” exhibit at the Columbia Museum of Art. Their music, all of which is composed by bandleader Colleen Clark, beautifully encapsulates an understanding of swing, New Orleans street beats, and blues.
About the Bandleader: Colleen Clark
Colleen Clark is not just the drummer and bandleader of The Southern Pines, but also an assistant professor of jazz at the University of South Carolina. Her role at the University involves coordinating small ensembles, conducting a big band, and instructing drum set studio and jazz history courses. Additionally, Clark holds the unique distinction of being the first and only drummer to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts from the globally recognized University of North Texas.
Concert Information
